Peace, 2024

Peace (2024) explores the Palestinian–Israeli conflict through contemporary map art, GIS spatial analysis and historical cartography. Developed from my longstanding interest in geopolitical conflicts, the artwork combines geographic data, historical narratives and symbolic imagery to communicate the complexities of territorial disputes and the aspiration for peace.

The artwork integrates multiple geographic datasets, including climate, topography, hydrology, land cover and human modifications, alongside historical peace initiatives dating back to 1919. Using Google Earth Engine and GIS, these layers are interpreted at national, regional and global scales, revealing connections between geography, history and geopolitical relationships.

Through layered cartography, contrasting colours and symbolic imagery, Peace transforms geographic information into visual narratives. The flags of Palestine and Israel, sometimes depicted as burning, reflect conflict and division, while the iconic V sign introduces a symbol of hope and reconciliation.

Rooted in my personal experience of geopolitical change following Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, the artwork invites reflection on the human consequences of conflict and the possibility of peaceful futures.
