Down Under, 2026
Down Under Landform is a contemporary Australian topographic map art piece that visualises the continent through a series of precision laser-cut topographic layers. Combining geographic data with sculptural materiality, the artwork reveals Australia’s landforms, ocean depths and geological structure.
Beneath the coastline, each bathymetric layer drops in 2,000-metre intervals, revealing deep ocean basins, continental shelf edges and submerged landforms that cradle the continent. Above sea level, 200-metre elevation steps rise through ridges, plateaus and plains, culminating in the serrated peaks of the Great Dividing Range along the eastern seaboard and the ancient highlands of the west.
Together, the layered cuts expose Australia not as a flat map, but as a sculptural cross-section of geological time, tectonic uplift and erosional memory. The work transforms geographic information into a tangible landscape, inviting viewers to explore the relationship between land, ocean and the forces that have shaped the Australian continent.
