Boundaries of divisions, 2025

This artwork explores the early rectangular form of Brisbane, defined by boundary roads in Spring Hill, West End, and South Brisbane that marked the edges of the CBD. These streets were not only physical borders but also tools of segregation in the 19th century, enforcing curfews that banned Indigenous people from entering the city core after 4 pm. They stand as remnants of a colonial past shaped by systemic racism and control.

Foregrounded with the modern skyline of Brisbane’s CBD, the piece juxtaposes the city’s contemporary identity with its darker historical truths. Through this interplay, the artwork invites reflection on the legacies of division and the importance of truth-telling in shaping a more inclusive narrative.
