Down Under Distorted, 2024

Down Under in Different Projections explores the inherent ambiguity and multiplicity in cartographic representations of Australia. This artwork dissects the scientific rationale behind various map projections, exposing how each technique reshapes the familiar contours of the continent into new forms. Through this process, the work invites the viewer to question the “truth” of maps and the authority they hold in defining our understanding of geography.

The artwork juxtaposes multiple representations of Australia—flattened, stretched, warped, and distorted—each emerging from the logic of its respective projection. From the compact accuracy of the Lambert Conformal Conic to the exaggerated expanses of the Mercator, the forms fluctuate between scientific precision and aesthetic abstraction. The result is a series of seemingly contradictory yet mathematically valid realities, challenging the viewer to consider how these distortions influence our perception of scale, shape, and significance.

By embracing ambiguity, Down Under in Different Projections highlights the tension between science and subjectivity, precision and perspective. The artwork serves as both a critique and celebration of the art and science of cartography, reminding us that even the most grounded representations of the world are shaped by human intention and context.
