Peace, 2024
Intrigued by my longstanding interest in conflicts, which began during my PhD studies, I delved into the complex and enduring tensions between Palestinians and Israelis, seeking to leverage the communicative power of Geoart through my cultural perspective. I meticulously curated a series of overlays encompassing various facets such as climate data, topographic contours, human modifications, hydrological analyses, land cover classifications, historical peace seeking quotes by leaders of two nations and historical photographs dating as far back as 1919 (sourced from Radio Free Europe), offering insights spanning over a century. The geospatial data was collected from the Google Earth Engine. These overlays were crafted at three distinct scales – national, regional, and global – with the intention of elucidating the geopolitical dimensions of this conflict, including neighboring countries and the broader global context in which it operates.
These overlays were crafted using specific color palettes and arrangement techniques, complemented by the inclusion of the flags of both nations. The innovative use of flags and symbolic imagery, such as burning, offered a new view to shedding light on the conflict while advocating for peace. Additionally, I chose to highlight the iconic V sign of peace, famously associated with Winston Churchill in 1943, as a prominent symbol in the visual narrative.
This creative endeavor represents my cultural response, rooted in a personal connection to a region that has grappled with the complexities of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict for the past 44 years, particularly after the Islamic revolution in Iran.
