Urban Mandala: Reflections of Brisbane, 2025
“Brisbane Mandala” reimagines the city of Brisbane through a highly conceptual lens. The city map is mirrored along two axes, forming a symmetrical composition that distorts the urban landscape into a meditative, abstract pattern. This transformation offers not just a geographical interpretation, but a Persian-inspired approach to geometry and design. The mandala, traditionally a spiritual symbol of wholeness and unity, here serves to evoke a deeper reflection on the city’s growth, layout, and its interaction with natural forces. The resulting composition is both a literal and illusory representation of Brisbane—its streets, parks, and landmarks become part of a rhythmic pattern that challenges the viewer’s perception of the city.
To further enhance the reflective nature of the piece, a triangular mirror is added at the top, encased in glossy resin. This mirror amplifies the reflection of the viewer, drawing them into the artwork and encouraging a personal connection with the city. The resin surface intensifies the illusion, creating a dynamic, interactive element that allows the viewer to see themselves within the landscape. This addition not only deepens the illusion of Brisbane as a mirrored city but also emphasizes the viewer’s role in shaping and being shaped by the environment.
This artwork explores the tension between order and chaos, offering an intricate visual journey that reveals how the physical city could transform into a spiritual and cultural expression. By combining modern city planning with ancient Persian design principles and reflective materials, it blurs the lines between the tangible and the intangible, offering a visual meditation on the city’s evolving identity and our place within it.
