Shamsa - Persian Sun Motif and Contemporary GeoArt, 2024

Shamsa is a contemporary GeoArt exploration inspired by the traditional Persian sun motif, a radiating geometric pattern deeply rooted in Persian and Islamic art, architecture and cultural heritage.

Traditionally associated with light, unity, infinity and cosmic order, the Shamsa appears in Persian architectural ornamentation, illuminated manuscripts, domes and decorative arts. Its intricate arrangements of symmetry, repetition and radial geometry reflect the relationship between mathematical order, artistic expression and cultural symbolism.

In this artwork, Ata Tara reinterprets the Shamsa through geographic mapping and spatial layering, bringing together traditional Persian geometry and contemporary cartographic expression. Rather than reproducing the historical motif, the work explores how geometric patterns can become a spatial framework for expressing relationships between culture, identity and place.

Through the interaction of geometry, mapping and layered visual information, Shamsa connects Persian artistic heritage with contemporary GeoArt practice. The work invites viewers to explore how cultural patterns can be transformed through spatial interpretation while retaining their historical and symbolic significance.
