This artwork combines antique maps of Persia from the 1700s to early 1900s, created by European cartographers, with modern GIS data to capture their historical accuracy. Using a steel wire brushing technique on cardboard, the artist evokes the passage of time and the decay of these maps, symbolizing their wear over centuries. Juxtaposed with the maps are laser-cut portraits of Neda Agha Soltan, an Iranian woman who became a symbol of the 2009 protests after her tragic death. The piece connects the ancient landscape with feminist themes, highlighting the ongoing struggle for gender equality in Iran, particularly through the lens of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement.
