Resilient Honiara, 2023
Resilient Honiara (2023) is a GeoArt project exploring community resilience, nature-based solutions and flood mitigation in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The artwork reflects a five-year research initiative led by Professor Darryn McEvoy at RMIT University, supported by UN-Habitat, focusing on the Koah Hill community.
The project involved local communities in establishing bamboo nurseries and cultivating vetiver grass to reduce flood risks, stabilise riverbanks and restore degraded landscapes. These nature-based solutions demonstrate the importance of community participation and local environmental knowledge in building resilience.
Through geographic representation and artistic interpretation, Resilient Honiara communicates the relationship between landscape planning, cultural identity and environmental adaptation. The artwork highlights how collaborative design, local craftsmanship and nature-based solutions can support vulnerable communities and inspire more resilient futures.
