This work maps the enduring geography of Australia’s fossil fuel economy. Coal mines, gas infrastructure, export corridors and industrial networks emerge as glowing burn lines across the continent, tracing pathways of extraction that have shaped both landscape and climate. Drawing on GIS analyses of carbon dioxide and methane concentrations, active mining operations, temperature anomalies and seafloor bathymetry, the artwork reveals the hidden infrastructures and atmospheric consequences of energy production. What is usually invisible, emissions, heat and environmental disruption, becomes legible as a landscape of accumulation, where industrial systems intersect with rising temperatures and ecological vulnerability
Renewables (yellowish)
The quiet force of Australia’s renewable energy transition emerges through layered readings of wind, sunlight and water. Solar farms, wind energy facilities and hydro systems appear as luminous nodes within a living network shaped by the movement of natural forces. Combining datasets on solar radiation, wind speed, hydrology, renewable energy infrastructure and bathymetry, the work maps an alternative energy geography founded not on extraction but on renewal. Rather than consuming finite resources, these systems operate through an ongoing relationship with atmosphere, terrain and ocean, suggesting a future energy landscape grounded in reciprocity with the natural world.
Algae Futures: Cultivating Restoration (greenish)
Algae Futures: Cultivating Restoration imagines a regenerative energy future in which degraded land and former extraction sites are transformed into productive landscapes of renewal. Using land cover, elevation, hydrology and mining datasets, the work identifies opportunities for closed-loop algae biofuel production that minimise ecological disturbance while supporting climate adaptation. Inspired by natural systems yet grounded in technological innovation, the artwork proposes an alternative model of energy generation, one that prioritises restoration, stewardship and the repair of landscapes altered by past industrial activity.
Energy Mixity and Connection to Country
This work weaves together Australia’s evolving energy mix with enduring cultural connections to Country. Datasets representing coal, renewable energy and emerging biofuels are layered alongside AIATSIS maps of Indigenous Australia, creating a dialogue between energy systems, landscape and cultural knowledge. Dense forms evoke the legacy of extraction, while expanding patterns suggest the emergence of renewable futures and experimental bioenergy pathways. At the centre of the composition are the enduring geographies of Country, recognising First Nations custodianship and the deep relationships between people, land and energy. The work invites reflection on transition, not only as a technological challenge, but as an opportunity to reimagine how energy futures can be shaped through care, responsibility and connection to place.
